These occur when one country imposes trade restrictions and no other country responds. A country can also unilaterally relax trade restrictions, but this rarely happens. This would penalize the country with a competitive disadvantage. The United States and other developed countries do so only as a kind of foreign aid to help emerging countries strengthen strategic industries that are too small to be a threat. It helps the economies of emerging countries to develop and creates new markets for U.S. exporters. These agreements between three or more countries are the most difficult to negotiate. The larger the number of participants, the more difficult the negotiations. They are, by nature, more complex than bilateral agreements, insofar as each country has its own needs and requirements. There are pros and cons of trade agreements.
By removing tariffs, they reduce import prices and consumers benefit from them. However, some domestic industries are suffering. They cannot compete with countries with lower standards of living. This allows them to leave the store and make their employees suffer. Trade agreements often require a trade-off between businesses and consumers. Overall, the United States currently has 14 trade agreements with 20 different countries. Economists have tried to assess the extent to which free trade agreements can be considered public goods. First, they deal with a key element of free trade agreements, the system of on-board tribunals, which act as arbiters in international trade disputes. These serve as a clarification of existing statutes and international economic policies, as confirmed by trade agreements.  Under a free trade agreement, countries may agree not to discriminate against service providers or investors in other countries and not to create certain barriers to trade and investment. This will allow New Zealand exporters to open up new opportunities in areas such as private education, ict services, professional services and transportation services, and will provide more security and transparency for New Zealand suppliers and investors.
It is also important to note that a free trade agreement is a reciprocal agreement that is authorized by Article XXIV of the GATT. Autonomous trade agreements for developing and least developed countries are permitted by the 1979 decision by the signatories of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) (“empowerment clause”) on differentiated and more favourable treatment, reciprocity and increased participation of developing countries. It forms the legal basis for the WTO`s Generalized Preference System (GSP).  Free trade agreements and preferential trade agreements (as mentioned by the WTO) are considered an exception to the MFN principle.  The notion of free trade is the opposite of trade protectionism or economic isolationism. There are currently a number of free trade agreements in the United States. These include multi-nation agreements such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which includes the United States, Canada and Mexico, and the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), which includes most Central American nations.
